Haldwani is the largest city in Uttarakhand. It is only an hour away from the lake city of Nainital, which has always been a place of attraction for the people. This area is spread over 250 square kilometers and is situated at 424 meters above sea level. Haldwani was established in 1834 by George William Traill.

The city is represented by two elected members in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Haldwani has two Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) seats Haldwani and Kaladhungi. Both these seats are currently held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

History of Haldwani


The history of Haldwani can be traced back to the ancient Kumaon Kingdom, which was founded in the 8th century. The region was ruled by the Chand dynasty, who were Hindu warriors and rulers. Haldwani was an important center of trade and commerce.

Haldwani was known in ancient times as the marketplace of the hills where many 'Haldu' trees were found. Haldu means Kadam trees which are called Haldina Cordifolia in English. For this reason, the name of this area became famous as Haldwani.

In the 19th century, Haldwani was annexed by the British and made part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. The British established a railway station in Haldwani, which led to the further development of the city as a major transport hub.
