The sacred shrine of Yamunotri in Uttarakhand is scheduled to open for pilgrims on May 10, 2024, marking the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritya, a day of prosperity and new beginnings in Hindu tradition.
Origin of the Yamuna River & Associated Legends:
The legendary River Yamuna finds its source in the pristine Yamunotri glacier, towering at an altitude of 6,315 meters above sea level. The glacier, nestled against the steep slopes near the Kalind peak, gives birth to the Yamuna River, also known as Kalindi as it descends from the mountains. The surrounding area, including the Saptarishi Kund and the majestic Banderpoonch peak, is steeped in mythical tales and divine lore.
