Vanshi Narayan Temple is located in the Urgam valley of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This temple is situated at a distance of about 12 km from the famous Kalpeshwar Mahadev temple in Panch Kedars and about 10 km from Devgram. Vanshi Narayan Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is the only Dham of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand which opens with sunrise on the day of Rakshabandhan for only one day and the doors of the temple are closed for a year as soon as the sunset.

However, women eagerly wait for this unique temple to open because the temple opens on the auspicious day of Rakshabandhan and unmarried girls and married women all tie Rakhi to Lord Narayan. Also, they pray for everyone's welfare and happiness, and prosperity.

The Vanshinarayan temple was built in the sixth century during the time of King Yashodval. It is a popular belief that in this temple, Devrishi Narad worships Lord Vishnu for 364 days, Devrishi goes somewhere for a day and on the same day, humans get the right to worship in this temple.


Mythology related to Vanshi Narayan Temple

According to Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, and Shrimad Bhagwat Katha, Narayan took the Vamana avatar to crush the ego of King Bali and sent him to Patal Lok by asking King Bali as Dakshina in three steps. When King Bali's ego was destroyed, he also asked Lord Narayana to stay in front of him day and night.

King Bali urged Lord Vishnu to become his gatekeeper. Lord Vishnu accepted this request of King Bali and he went to Hades with King Bali. Due to not seeing Lord Vishnu for several days, Goddess Lakshmi got upset and went to Narada Muni.

After reaching Narad Muni, he asked Mata Lakshmi where is Lord Vishnu. Narad Muni told Mata Lakshmi that she is in the underworld and remains the gatekeeper of King Bali.

Narad Muni told Mata Lakshmi the way to bring back Lord Vishnu, he said that you should go to Hades on the full moon of the month of Shravan and tie a Raksha sutra on the wrist of King Bali. After tying the Rakshasutra, ask King Bali to return them. Mata Lakshmi says "I do not know the way to Hades", will you walk with me to Hades. Devrishi Narad accepted the request of Mother Lakshmi and he went with her to Hades.


After which, in the absence of Narad Muni, the Jar priest of Kalgoth village worshiped Vanshi Narayan, since then this tradition is going on. On the day of Rakshabandhan, butter comes from every house of Kalgoth village for Lord Narayan and Prasad is prepared from this butter to all devotees.

Many rare species of flowers bloom in the flower garden of Lord Vanshi Narayan. Lord Narayan's makeup is also done in this temple on Shravan Purnima. There are priests of Thakur caste in the temple. 

The womb of this temple, 10 feet high, built in the Katyuri style, is also square. The special thing about this temple is that both Lord Narayan and Lord Shiva are seen in the statue of this temple. The idols of Lord Ganesha and forest goddesses are also present in the Vanshi Narayan temple.

The distance from Rishikesh to Joshimath by road to reach Vanshi Narayan Temple is about 255 km. Joshimath to Helang valley is about 10 km, from Helang to Urgam can be reached by jeep. And by traveling on foot from the Urgam valley, one can reach the Vanshi Narayan temple via Devgram. 

The beautiful confluence of Alaknanda and Kalpaganga rivers can be seen on the journey from Helang to Urgam valley.

The nearest airstrip to Vanshinarayan Temple is Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun, which is located at a distance of 20 km from Rishikesh, from Rishikesh to Joshimath can be reached by bus, bike, and other motor vehicles.
